Abuse, sudden loss, betrayal, natural disaster...trauma comes in countless forms.
I've come to understand over the years that what we physically survive, we then own psychologically and emotionally. The key, then, is to understand HOW to own what we've physically survived in such a way that the trauma of what happened doesn't become something that owns us.
Here's a TED talk by Robert K. Ross, MD, held at Ironwood State Prison in California on what childhood trauma is, what it does to a person, and what it takes to overcome past trauma.
Another video I like, that adds to this overall topic, is a talk by Dr. John Rigg, a physician who works with trauma patients, on the effects of trauma on our brains and behaviors.
