One dangerous way of thinking to avoid...
Every day we encounter the weakest and most dangerous type of thinking: wholesale generalizations of people. Entire races, cultures, religions, or occupations get labeled by the actions of a few people. A teenager does something stupid and suddenly "kids these days" are stupid. A crime happens nearby and the reaction is "this city sucks." "Gun owners" are this. "New Yorkers are that. "Liberals" vs. conservatives." The media divide us into categories. The more simplistic a meme is, the more it gets circulated online. We have to swim against this current to remember that every individual is unique. We can do better. Reality is complex and nuanced. We're all snap-judged by weak thinking, but we're always more complex than simple labels.

"Searchlight intelligence" is a term coined by psychologist Howard Gardner, author of Five Minds for the Future available at Amazon. The term describes the ability to connect seemingly disconnected people and ideas in order to anticipate societal shifts. In other words, it helps people get a heads-up on the future. It's what gives leaders the ability to adapt swiftly to a changing and unfolding road ahead. This blog article from Harvard Business Review gives three steps to take to stay sharp as a leader in pretty much any industry.
